Intro/Overview:
Applicants must be planning to enroll at a University of California campus. This is a one-year scholarship with a minimum award of $5,000.00. Application window: January 5, 2026 – April 10, 2026.
Background:
The Grant and Carol Bennett Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of Grant Bennett, who served more than twenty-two years on the Sacramento City Unified School District Board of Education. Mr. Bennett was a tireless supporter of student success and educational programs that prepare young people for their goals, with a special interest in those pursuing business careers. Friends and colleagues across the community and state contributed to establish this fund. Each year, investment earnings finance a scholarship for a Sacramento City Unified School District high school graduate who will attend a University of California campus.
Award Details:
- Type: One-time scholarship awarded to one or more students.
- Minimum amount: $5,000.00.
- Payment: Funds are disbursed through the Financial Aid Office of the recipient’s UC campus in equal installments each term (quarter or semester) during the upcoming academic year.
- The award will not be released until the recipient’s actual enrollment at a University of California campus is verified and the documentation is approved by the chair of the awards committee.
Who is eligible:
- Graduating seniors from any high school within Sacramento City Unified School District (including district or dependent charter schools).
- Applicants must be planning to enroll at a University of California campus.
- Candidates should have had a well-rounded and outstanding high school experience.
Selection criteria / What applicants should demonstrate:
- Commitment to enroll at a University of California campus.
- Strong academic performance (outstanding GPA).
- Participation in extracurricular activities.
- Community involvement.
- Preference may be given to students intending to pursue a business-related career.
Notification of winners:
Scholarship recipients will be announced at the student’s high school awards assembly unless otherwise specified.
Required application materials (all applicants must complete the online application and attach the following):
1. Two letters of recommendation (required):
- One from a school official (principal, counselor, or teacher).
- One from someone outside the school (employer, pastor, youth leader, or community leader).
2. Student essay (typed in the application’s essay box; 750 words or fewer) addressing:
- Short-term and long-term goals.
- Personal challenges.
- Past and planned future community involvement.
3. Transcript: An unofficial copy of the student’s high school transcript, including the first semester of senior year.
4. College enrollment verification: Proof of acceptance to a University of California campus, or confirmation from the university that enrollment/acceptance is in process.
Important condition:
Cash disbursement will be withheld until the recipient’s UC enrollment is confirmed and the awards committee chair has approved the documentation.
