Huebner Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by Society of the 1st Infantry Division
The Society of the 1st Infantry Division, established in 1919, has operated continuously since its founding. Its membership includes Soldiers who served with the Big Red One in World War I, World War II, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, during the Cold War/peacetime, and more recently in Iraq and Afghanistan. This expanding community of 1st Infantry Division veterans takes pride in service with the Army’s oldest and most storied division.
Huebner Scholarships
Named for Lieutenant General Clarence L. Huebner, commander of the Big Red One in World War II, Huebner Scholarships are competitive awards available to children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of former 1st Infantry Division members, as well as to children of active-duty 1st Infantry Division Soldiers and those assigned to attached units. There are two award categories:
- Huebner — College and University
- Huebner — Trade and Technical Schools (new category)
Huebner — Trade and Technical Schools: Eligibility
Applicants for the Trade and Technical Schools award should be high school seniors who have maintained a satisfactory GPA and demonstrate a technical or vocational background. The trade or technical school must be accredited; multi-year programs are acceptable. Each application will be evaluated on the student’s achievements and the institution the applicant intends to attend. Note that general Huebner eligibility (relationship to a 1st Infantry Division Soldier/veteran) also applies.
Award Amount
Scholarship funding is determined by tuition costs and will not exceed $15,000 over a four-year period. If the accredited program’s tuition is less than the award amount, the scholarship will cover up to the actual tuition and allowable supply costs only. All scholarship payments are issued directly to the educational institution.
Selection Criteria
Recipients are chosen based on academic record (GPA), stated career objectives, and the insights conveyed in the applicant’s essay explaining their occupational choice.
Application Requirements
Please submit a complete application packet — incomplete submissions will not be accepted. Include the following:
1. Completed application form.
2. Essay (approximately 150 words) describing why you selected your chosen occupation or field.
3. A copy of your most recent high school transcript (and transcript from a vocational school if currently enrolled).
4. Letter of acceptance from the trade or technical school you plan to attend.
5. Two letters of recommendation from non-relatives (examples: guidance counselor, teacher, or employer).
6. Documentation proving your parent’s or grandparent’s service with the 1st Infantry Division.
Program Purpose
The 1st Infantry Division Foundation’s scholarship effort seeks to support deserving high school students connected to 1ID veterans.
