Dan R. Montgomery Scholarship

Overview
Dan R. Montgomery served as Thurston County’s elected Sheriff from 1979 to 1986. Earlier in his career he worked as a Traffic Officer with the California Highway Patrol and as a Deputy Sheriff in Yuba County, California during the 1960s and 1970s. Sheriff Montgomery died in January 2005. In 2003 his family created the Dan R. Montgomery Scholarship Fund to support young men and women pursuing postsecondary education.
Purpose
The scholarship is aimed primarily at students preparing for careers as law enforcement officers. Candidates pursuing work that supports or complements policing—such as mental health services for law enforcement, community outreach, or crisis-response roles—will also be considered. Preference is given to applicants who identify as a person of color and to those who plan to attend a college or university in Washington State.
Eligibility
- Must be a graduating senior who lives in Thurston County.
- Intends to pursue a career in law enforcement or a related profession (for example, social work or mental-health services that support policing).
- Preference will be given to applicants who identify as a person of color and to students choosing institutions within Washington State.
- The award may be renewed for one additional year; applicants must reapply annually to be considered for renewal.
