About the E. B. Miller Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was created from an initial gift given in memory of E. B. Miller, a third‑generation sawmill operator and long‑time advocate for Ohio’s forest industry. Mr. Miller began his career using horses and steam‑powered sawmills and, before his death in 1992, had owned and operated mills across all four corners of Ohio. He helped develop the forestry curriculum at Hocking Technical College and served as chairman of the OFA Paul Bunyan Show for more than a decade. The founders of the scholarship established the fund to encourage talented individuals to enter the forestry profession and to help meet the industry’s future needs for well‑qualified professionals.
Purpose and Use of Funds
The E. B. Miller Memorial Scholarship provides financial support to students pursuing forest resource education. Awarded funds may be applied to tuition, room and board, laboratory fees, or other approved educational expenses.
Award Details
Scholarships are grants and do not need to be repaid. The number and amount of awards each year depend on investment returns. At least one scholarship will be awarded annually. Previous recipients may receive awards in multiple years, but they must reapply each year.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the scholarship an applicant must:
- Be a resident of Ohio and a citizen of the United States.
- Have attended an Ohio high school.
- Be a high school graduate accepted for admission to an approved college, university, junior college, or technical college that offers a forestry resources curriculum of at least two years; OR be a current college student in a forestry program who can demonstrate satisfactory scholastic progress.
Applications that fail to meet all of the above criteria will be disqualified.
Selection and Notification
A Scholarship Committee of the Ohio Forestry Association Foundation will select recipients. Preference will be given to students who will attend Ohio colleges and universities. Scholarship winners will be announced during the first week of June.
